A beaver stands at the edge of his lodge, gnawed log in his paws, gazing up at you as if he’s just paused mid-project. The lodge is carved and glazed in warm browns. Blue glaze ripples below like pond water, while trees circle the mug, with each trunk chewed partway or clean through, busily damming the bog and building his home.

Beavers are a keystone species. Their dams slow and filter water, create wetlands that shelter fish, birds, amphibians, and countless other animals, and help landscapes weather drought and flooding. This little engineer is shaping the whole ecosystem around him.

For those who know small, steady work can change a whole landscape.
